In an analog to digital conversion (ADC), the analog video signals have to be set to certain levels (scaled) before digitizing so the full amplitude of the signal fits within the available parameters of the digital system. For example, black to be set at level 64 and white at 940 (under ITU-R BT.601), while the computer scale is 0 to 1023. Can also mean scaled from sd to HD.

Changing the resolution of an image. Scaling up means increasing the resolution, and scaling down means decreasing. A bi-cubic algorithm can be used to obtain a softer result, by intelligently merging the values of neighboring pixels.
