A shot employing shallow focus in which the depth of field is altered so that the background is gradually brought into focus while the foreground is gradually taken out of focus or visa versa. Requires the use of a lens of variable (as opposed to a fixed) focal length.

Racking focus is the technique of directing the attention of the viewer of video footage by shifting the focus of the lens from a subject in the foreground to a subject in the background, or vice versa.
