Saving an image as a .jpg or .jpeg is a method of lossy compression, since some information is discarded. RAW files are uncompressed. Many digital cameras permit the photographer to select the degree of compression (e.g. Standard, Fine, Extra-Fine or Superfine) for an image the photographer is about to take.
